Low on inspiration and laughs, Fanboys is a movie that should have been made years ago. Christopher Marquette plays Eric, a would-be heir to a used-car dealership and former loser who rejects his high-school buddies' continuing preoccupation with childish things, including George Lucas' Star Wars saga. When his lifelong friend, Linus (Sam Huntington), is diagnosed in 1999 with a terminal illness, however, Eric joins geeky Windows (Jay Baruchel), wildman Hutch (Dan Fogler) and comely Zoe (Kirsten Bell) on a cross-country trip to steal a print of Star Wars: Phantom Menace from Lucas' Skywalker Ranch for Eric to have a look. Along the way, of course, sundry ! disasters and complications await, everything from getting caught in a gay biker bar to a confrontation with a Vegas pimp (Seth Rogen, genuinely funny). The misadventures at Skywalker include a few good moments, especially when the guards look like characters Lucas might have considered for either of the two trilogies. The best comic material concerns hostilities between Star Wars fanatics and Star Trek Trekkers, including a scene set in the Ohio hometown of James Tiberius Kirk. A few good cameos include William Shatner, Carrie Fisher, and Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. --Tom Keogh

Vince Vaughn is enormously enjoyable as the titular Fred Claus, disgruntled older brother! of the better-known St. Nicholas himself, i.e., the North Pol! e’s ve ry own Santa (Paul Giamatti). A garrulous hustler running from the emotional fallout of the ultimate sibling rivalry, poor Fred keeps trying to find happiness through one failed scheme after another, pushing away the people who care about him most. When brother Santa puts the squeeze on him to help out in the toy factory atop the world, Fred turns the place into one big, raucous party. Unfortunately, he’s unaware that Santa and Mrs. Claus (Miranda Richardson) are under tight scrutiny from an oversight committee (represented by a calculating Kevin Spacey) and could be shut down. The film, directed by David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), gleams and twinkles the way a holiday movie should, and has plenty of fun material for youngsters, including a wacky chase scene in which Fred goes on the run from a half-dozen, angry Salvation Army Santas. But Fred Claus is also supposed to appeal to hip adults with a taste for ironic farce, and on that score the movie feels like ! a succession of Saturday Night Live skits more than an organic whole. Still, Vaughn holds everything together with a smart, insightful performance that looks deep into his character’s torment--with more than a few laughs. --Tom Keogh

These characters would probably be despicable even if they weren't addicted to some narcotic. And the talk is endless; conversations that finish with a door slam are taken up moments later on the cell phone (a nice updating touch by Rabe). What draws big-name actors to Rabe's work is the chance to work on one's raw acting talent. Penn and Palminteri fit their roles like gloves, and Spacey again proves he is one of the most watchable actors around. Ostensibly the story of the mayhem surrounding Marc Blitzstein's worker's opera The Cradle Will Rock, directed by Orson Welles for the WPA at the height of the Depression, Robbins paints a veritable mural around this incident, a city alive with plotting industrialists (John Cusack as Nelson Rockefeller), radical artists (Ruben Blades's Diego Rivera), and struggling citizens (Bill Murray's frustrated vaudeville ventriloquist Tommy Crickshaw). Lightnin! g strikes when the government closes the show before it even o! pens and the cast marches 20 blocks to an empty theater and tosses the staging aside to perform in the aisles, the balconies, and the seats. It's a rare moment of cinema capturing the immediacy and charge of live theater on the screen and it's the heart of Robbins's often exhilarating film. His heroes are Blitzstein (a warm, gently impassioned Hank Azaria) and cheery WPA Theater director Hallie Flanagan (Broadway star Cherry Jones), but in the process he snidely turns Welles and producer John Houseman into sour, silly caricatures. The stew of artistic creation and political action gets murky and at times contradictory, but vivid performances and Robbins' driving pace and staccato crosscutting keep it humming through even the most didactic moments. The songs are by Blitzstein, and the character-rich cast also features Vanessa Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, John Turturro, Emily Watson, and Philip Baker Hall. --Sean Axmaker

In The Devil's Advocate Al Pacino takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly relishes his chance to raise hell. He's a New York lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting offers of power, sex, and money. Think of the story as a twist on John Grisham's The Firm, with the corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is wooden, and therefore doesn't seem to have much of a soul to lose, but he's really just our excuse to meet the devil. Pacino's the main attraction, g! leefully showing off his--and the Antichrist's--chops at perpetrating menace and mayhem.
