FIERCE PEOPLE - DVD MovieTaking F. Scott Fitzgerald's adage "The very rich are different from you and me" as his guide, actor-director Griffin Dunne (Practical Magic) paints a poisonous portrait of privilege. When coke-addicted masseuse Liz Earl (Diane Lane) hits rock bottom, she calls in a favor with an affluent client. In exchange for her services, Ogden Osborne (Donald Sutherland in a sly performance) welcomes Liz and her 16-year-old son, Finn (Anton Yelchin), to his East Coast estate. Liz stops drinking and drugging, while Finn bonds with Ogden's grandchildren, Bryce (C! hris Evans) and Maya (Kristen Stewart). Though his mother starts dating Ogden's physician, Finn remains convinced her services extend beyond the therapeutic. Nonetheless, he grows fond of the sensitive, if controlling billionaire. Finn's own father, an anthropologist, deserted him years ago to study the Ishkanani, i.e. "the fierce people," of South America. When Finn is attacked by a masked figure, his warm feelings towards the Osbornes turn cold. At this point, the film takes a disappointingly conventional turn as Finn tries to determine who abused him--and to initiate some payback. If the basic premise never quite rings true, the director, son of bestselling author Dominick Dunne, carries on family tradition in trying to understand what makes people like Ogden tick (Dirk Wittenborn adapted the screenplay from his novel). Dunne's sympathies may lie with Liz and Finn, but obvious advantages aside, Ogden runs away with the show. He may indeed be "different," but he's also th! e most fully rounded character in the entire muddled exercise.! --Ka thleen C. Fennessy

Take West Side Story, remove the music, add excessive profanity and violence, and you'll get Deuces Wild. It's an overripe melodrama in which rival street gangs--in this case Deuces vs. Vipers in 1958 Brooklyn--inevitably clash in a deadly rumble, preceded by shameless scenery-chewing from nearly everyone involved. Stephen Dorff plays the head Deuce, agonizing over his older brother's drug overdose and leading a cast of rising stars and familiar faces including Brad Renfro as Dorff's hot-tempered kid brother, Norman Reedus as the vicious lead Viper, Fairuza Balk as Renfro's no-nonsense girlfriend, and Matt Dillon (uncredited) as the kingpin who introduces heroin to Dorff's drug-free turf. Balthazar Getty, Frankie Muniz, and James Franco are also in the cast, suggesting ! that director Scott Kalvert was hoping for an unforgettable ensemble. A series of guest shots by such artists as Van Morrison, Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton, Mick Hucknall, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, Joe Cocker, Marty Stuart, the Rolling Stones, and Willie Nelson, Deuces Wild is far removed from the blues King played in the '40s and '50s. It's more like psychodrama, especially in the case of the Cocker track, "Dangerous Mood." Nobody here, celebrity notwithstan! ding, is just going through the motions. The album's crass con! cept is redeemed by, among others, drummers Steve Jordan, Jim Keltner, and Charlie Watts. Although it's an overblown international project with no affinity for the meaning of the blues, the players and their love for the music triumph. --Stanley Booth

Accidentally left behind when his family rushes off on a Christmas vacation, Kevin gets busy decorating the house for the holidays. But he's not decking the halls with tinsel and holly. Two bumbling burglars are trying to break in, and Kevin's rigging a bewildering battery of booby traps to welcome them!Now and forever a favorite among kids, this 1990 comedy written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) and directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire) ushered Macaulay Culkin onto the screen as a troubled 8-year-old who doesn't comfortably mesh with his large family. He's forced to grow a little after being acci! dentally left behind when his folks and siblings fly off to Paris. A good-looking boy, Culkin lights up the screen during several funny sequences, the most famous of which finds him screaming for joy when he realizes he's unsupervised in his own house. A bit wooden with dialogue, the then-little star's voice could grate on the nerves (especially in long, wise-child passages of pure bromide), but he unquestionably carries the film. Billie Bird and John Candy show up as two of the interesting strangers Culkin's character meets. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are entertainingly cartoonish as thieves, but the ensuing violence once the little hero decides to keep them out of his house is over-the-top. --Tom Keogh
