Henry Poole Is Here (2-disc W/soundtrack Cd)

  • Bonus CD of Henry Poole Is Here soundtrack
Henry Poole is Here tells the funny, poignant and uplifting story of a disillusioned man who attempts to hide from life in a rundown suburban tract home only to discover he cannot escape the forces of hope.Henry Poole Is Here is an odd if enjoyable dramedy about everyone's need for a miracle now and then--though one person's miracle can easily be another's nightmare. Henry Poole (Luke Wilson) is a misanthropic loner who attempts to buy a specific house at any price and is rebuffed. Instead, he buys another house in some need of repair but brushes off any discussion of improvement, mysteriously claiming he's not going to be living in it very long. Uncertain what that means, Henry's neighbors learn to give him some distance, until Esperanza (Adriana Barraza) decides she can see the face of Jesus Christ in a water stain on Henry's house. In sho! rt order, Esperanza has alerted her church and friends, and a disgruntled Henry's backyard is full of true believers. Directed by Mark Pellington (Arlington Road), Henry Poole Is Here occasionally finds itself awash in treacle and sincerity, especially where Henry's developing relationship with a single mom (Radha Mitchell) and her near-mute child are concerned. But the film never alienates viewers disinclined to believe in iconic apparitions, adding a neat twist toward the end that makes Henry's rage against Esperanza's faith work for and not against him. Making the whole enterprise worthwhile is Wilson's fine performance as a man who has given up on everything (for reasons that eventually become clear in the story) but, in fact, wants nothing more than to embrace life. --Tom Keogh

GARDEN PARTY - DVD MovieIntermingling lives in modern Los Angeles: a musician-drifter (Erik Smith) without a place to crash, a runaway teen (Willa Holland) making bank by posing for Internet cheesecake, a gay Nebraskan (Alexander Cendese) trying to make friends, a real-estate agent (Vinessa Shaw) with a pot-pushing habit... these and others are the satellites circling the general sense of decadence in Jason Freeland's low-key comedy-drama. The film carries a vague echo of Alan Rudolph's Welcome to L.A. in its! jaundiced view of the city of angels, but on a much less sophisticated level; the storytelling could use a blood transfusion, and the young characters are stamped from a cookie-cutter. Individual actors try their best, and the always-underused Shaw gets some nice moments going with Richard Gunn, a client with kink. The standout, in a much smaller role, is Ross Patterson, doing an obnoxious talent scout routine (your movie's in trouble, however, when an irritating supporting player is much more fun than the main characters). The final misstep is the title, borrowed from the great Ricky Nelson song about phonies on the loose--a bit of overstatement the film didn't need. --Robert HortonPerfect for imaginative play, this set lets kids pretend to be friends with their favorite fairy Rosetta. The Banger Sisters

  • Condition: New
  • Format: DVD
  • Closed-captioned; Color; Dolby; DVD; Widescreen; NTSC
For a movie focused on the lives of two adult women who were groupies during the golden age of classic rock, it's the modern artists on the Banger Sisters soundtrack that steal the show. Buckcherry snarl and spit their way through spirited punk romp "Crushed"; Black Crowes vocalist Chris Robinson pours his heart out on a soulful piano-brushed 1970s rock emulation; and Ben Folds's Jackson Browne cover bounces with warm pop nimbleness. Vintage rockers fare rather well, too, especially ex-Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin's prog rock-meets-ethereal world music Animals cover, Peter Frampton's guitar acrobatics, and Steppenwolf's gritty hip-shaking. The only real eyesore here is Tommy Lee's abysmal take on David Bowie's "Fame," a stuttering rap-aggro-electro amalgamation that sounds like a robot fallin! g apart at the seams. Otherwise, for fans of classic rock--or modern spins on the originals--the Banger Sisters soundtrack won't disappoint. --Annie Zaleski Suzette leaves Los Angeles to seek out her old friend Vinnie, both former rock groupies, only to find that LaVinia is now married with children living a very conservative lifestyle.
Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
Rating: R
Release Date: 12-JUN-2007
Media Type: DVDFor thinly scripted fluff, The Banger Sisters sure is a lot of fun. With Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon as former groupies now settling into their fifties, this predictable comedy gets a zesty boost of vitality and unsentimental nostalgia. Trouble is, Lavinia (or Vinnie, played by Sarandon) is an uptight Phoenix housewife with a lawyer husband, two spoiled daughters, and a calendar full of charity benefits. Free-spirited Suzette (Hawn) remained true to their past as the notorious rocker-lovin' Bange! r Sisters, and when she visits Vinnie after decades apart, it! 's not l ong before Vinnie rediscovers the lively self she'd buried under her drably expensive wardrobe. It's conspicuously formulaic, with Geoffrey Rush as another buttoned-up character liberated by Suzette's fun-loving wisdom. And yet, as Goldie channels the "Penny Lane" vibe that her daughter, Kate Hudson, brought to Almost Famous, this light and laugh-worthy movie reminds us that it's never too late to indulge a bit of rock & roll abandon. --Jeff Shannon

Diminutive pilots in training can let their imagination take flight with this stocky, swooshy, wiggly-wobbly airplane. Measuring 12 inches nose to tail, and 8 inches from wingtip t! o wingtip, this sturdy plastic plane features a pilot, two passengers, a piece of luggage, a door that opens, six windows, including the pilot’s windshield, a handle over the cut-out top, working wheels (which make the pilot and passengers go up and down as if encountering turbulence), and the obligatory face on the front of the craft. Push down on the pilot in her seat (yes, her seat…we are in the 21st century, you know!) for flashing lights, a tune, flight attendant commentary, and swooshing airplane sounds. Judging from the outfits of the passengers and the palm tree design on the wings, this aircraft seems to be headed for a tropical port--airport, that is. What’s not to love? Check out the entire line of Lil’ Movers vehicles. Three AA batteries required (not included). (Ages 18 months to 3 years) --Emilie Coulter
